Description of Work/Assignment: During spring break, this was less of an assignment and more so helping out a community with the high school paddling team. While on spring break the paddling team went to Hana to clean up the overgrown Taro weeds. For a couple of hours we cleared out weeds, preserved the precious Taro, and learned a lot. Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?: The 21st century skill that best fits with this is community/team bonding I believe is global awareness. I know that in Hawaiian culture the process of growing and collecting Taro is special so being able to be taught about that special connection, and learn more about Hawaiian culture. While clearing out the weeds with the paddling team we did a couple Hawaiian chants together to not only respect the culture, but be connected with it. The Hawaiian people work so hard and so long to get the Taro, so being able to feel that process made us all see a bit more clearly what they do every single day. Soon for community engagement, as a class, we are going to clean up the rocks and learn more about the cultural importance of why they are supposed to be stacked in a specific way and much more. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?: I am most proud of from this Hana clean-up by not giving up. Half way through the sun was beating down on us while we were covered head to toe in mud. However, we cleared out a great amount of overgrown weeds/brush, and found some surviving Taro along the way. Overall, it was really fun, and a good learning experience. How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?: I improved on the global awareness 21st century skill by participating and volunteering more in a community that need the help and got a better insight on the cultural aspects connected to the Taro and the process. What was most difficult about completing this task?: Again, the sun and the mud were the most difficult hurdles to jump over with completing the task. Another part that was difficult was physically pulling the weeds up from the roots. There would be about 2-3 of us on a really big and tough weed and all pull on the count of 3. After pulling hard enough we'd end up falling into the mud over and over again. How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?: If I knew exactly what I was getting myself into during this process, I would've worn a shirt I didn't care too much about, since the shirt I wore I had to trash due the dried up mud not fully washing off. How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?: How can you apply this to future learning?: In paddling, at school, and mostly my entire life, I've learned a lot in the past about the Hawaiian culture, and how much meaning and hard work they put into everything they do. I can apply this global awareness skill to my future in paddling, school, and basically the rest of my life. I can apply the things I've learned now and what I'll learn in the future to make me grow as a person in this world where humanity is against each other in many ways to where humans shouldn't be doing what they've been doing to other humans.
