Description of Work/Assignment: This essay was an argumentative essay for my Marine Biology class. The topic was to pick a Hawaiian fish and write a convincing essay as to why it should be the new state fish, along with the importance economically, mythologically, and historically/culturally.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why?: Financial and economic literacy I believe fits well with this assignment due to the economic importance of the Hawaiian fish I chose, which was the Ono. Economically, this fish brings value to the island because of how popular it is as a main dish in many restaurants and highly in demand per the tourist. What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why?: From this assignment I am most proud of the grade I got and putting together the information I learned, and gathered in a cohesive way.
How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment?: I developed and, or improved upon the 21st century skill, "Financial and economic literacy" in the way that I learned more about how much of an impact economically this single fish has on the island and it's economy.
What was most difficult about completing this task?: The most difficult part of this assignment was checking my sites that I used for my research and making sure they were feasible sources.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently?: If I could start over again, I would be sure to triple check my grammar. That was the only part I lost a couple points off on, so going forward I will be sure to check my grammar before submitting an essay.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past?: This assignment relates to what I have learned in the past about Hawaiian history, argumentative essays, and research essays, however, in this assignment puts a creative and real spin on choosing a new state fish for Hawaii.
