This semester in Humanities class we are learning about Hawaiian heroes and doing assignments every week or couple of weeks about a Hawaiian Hero that we chose in the beginning of quarter 3. The Hawaiian hero I chose to do all my projects and or assignments about is Queen Ka'ahumanu. For this assignment in the semester long Hawaiian heroes project/assignments we had to type out an argumentative essay about why our Hawaiian hero is important to Hawaii history. My goal for this assignment was to provide an argumentative essay that had grave detail, explanations, and examples as to why my Hawaiian hero, Queen Ka'ahumanu, was an important figure to Hawaiian history. Why I chose it: I chose to share this project/assignment on my portfolio, because from what I remember it was one of my first formal argumentative essay. I was very proud of how it turned out and how I took what I learned about Queen Ka'ahumanu and articulated the information, and details into a essay. I am also proud of taking what I learned from Mr. Adam about how to write a strong argumentative essay and writing one of my own. I really love writing and learning about Hawaiian history so this assignment was right up my ally. Writing this essay was probably one of my favorites to do in Mr. Adam's class this semester. 21st Century Skills: The21st century skill that best represents this project/assignment would be communication skills. This projects reflects communication skills because I took the information that I learned about my Hawaiian hero and communicated the information through writing. By taking the information about my Hawaiian hero and transferring it into my argumentative essay, I argued why my Hawaiian hero was an important figure to Hawaiian history. Communication skills is shown throughout the assignment in the way that I communicated with the reader through writing, which is one of the ways communication skills is exhibited. By writing the essay about all of the accomplishments of Queen Ka'ahumanu and why she was important to Hawaii gave the reader information, details, and examples of why Queen Ka'ahumanu is an important figure to Hawaiian history. How it Challenged me: The argumentative essay challenged me to think about how to present the information, details, and examples of why Queen Ka'ahumanu was an important person in Hawaiian history in the essay. The project/assignment showcased my interests of writing and typing. It also showcased my interest in learning about Hawaiian history and culture. My abilities that were showcased was my ability of comprehension in writing an argumentative essay. Another part of comprehension that was showcased was my ability in listening on how to write a strong argumentative essay, and doing the research that was necessary on my Hawaiian hero. How I could improve from this point and what I could do better next time: Next time, I could improve on the phrasing of my sentences and possibly add more detail. I could improve from this point on by continuing to write to better expand my horizons on vocabulary, phrasing of sentences, and grammar.
